A Tribe Called Quest, one of the most influential, innovative and commercially successful alternative hip hop acts during the 1990s, helped pave the way for a new wave of hip hop artists with their fusion of hip hop and jazz. The group, composed of Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammed and Jarobi White, formed in 1985 and split in 1998 then reunited in 2006. 2008 saw the release of a Best Of album. As of now, we’re not sure if there will be another album. Their official website shows a suspended account with no information on their current status. The documentary, entitled Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest and directed by Michael Rapaport, debuted at the Sundance Film Festival on January 22, 2011. It’s a documentary worth watching if it might reveal what’s up with the Tribe in 2011!!
