MiC check is a series where we check out what’s happening in the middle kingdom: original local music, art, fashion and more.
The weather’s getting nice, which means markets popping up all over Shanghai.  FYESTA has been killing it, and this weekend there’s something new happening in Red Town.
Sub-Culture – the crew bringing fresh bass acts like Kode 9 and Addison Groove to the Shelter – is launching a new clothing, art and music brand called SVBKVLT this Sunday with an all-day party at On Stage.
But “party” doesn’t do it justice, and neither does “market.”  (“Shindig” or “bash,” maybe..)  Besides six shops from indie/creative brands including SVBKVLT’s, there will be a score of live music and video performances, cinema screenings, a showcase of DIY synthesizers that you can also buy, and an exhibition from the always-tasty Idle Beats.
A lot of these brands and artists are based in and around the Shelter, and it’s a rare opportunity to check their work all in one place on a nice afternoon.  If you’ve never heard SLV or Chacha performing live (with her new project “Faded Ghost” on Sunday), if you’ve never seen Idle Beats’ screen-print magic, if you’ve never bought a record or a comic book in Shanghai, come check this out on Sunday.  Starts 2pm and it’s free. For more info, check out the Sub-Culture blog post on the shops here, and on the live happenings here.
